Summer has been in full swing all across Canada for near 2 months now, and as is usually the case the warm weather will probably last well into September. And the late sunsets are guaranteed to do that. Unless you live on the West Coast the cold winters in Canada mean people are especially eager to spend as much time in the outdoors as possible during the summer, and of course camping is always a big part of doing that. It’s an activity that’s especially dear to families, and we do have a lot of nice Provincial campgrounds in Ontario.
As you’d guess, smart waste management is always a pressing need at campsites, and there is a lot of waste produced by campers and there’s no getting around that reality. Campsites make clear about where that waste needs to go, and with what can be recycled and where that needs to go too. It’s not uncommon for private campsites to rent a dumpster at times during the summer season to efficiently get rid of large collections of waste, and of course we are your experts for dumpster rentals in the Trenton and Colborne areas of the Province.
One of the most appealing parts of camping is choosing what you’re going to cook for meals at your campsite, and more often than not people prefer to be grilling. That means fuel is needed, and as such there are hundreds if not thousands of empty gas cylinders that aren’t going to be taken back home from Ontario campsites every month. Far too many of them will be thrown into general refuse, but of course they can’t stay there as they can’t be disposed of properly that way. But the good news here is now used gas cylinders can be recycled in Ontario and campers can make that happen easily right from the campground
Orange Improved
Here at Load n’ Lift we do Ontario dumpster rentals and offer an affordable rubbish removal service for anyone who needs it at their property. Our trucks will bring the disposal bins right to the site anywhere in the Trenton and Colborne and surrounding areas, and our roll-off mini bins are ideal for not doing any damage to the ground. That’s often important when it’s a big home renovation project. But enough about that, we’re talking gas cylinder recycling here and so we need to talk about Ryse Solutions.
They are a multi-material producer responsibility organization (PRO) in Ontario and what’s making them newsworthy these days is they’ve launched an initiative to collect and recycle hazardous waste from parks across the province. The program is called OrangeCycle and they’re operating it on behalf of companies that have a legal obligation to collect and recycle the single-use propane cylinders sold in Ontario under the province’s Hazardous and Special Products (HSP) Regulation.
The program comes right behind the Orange Drop Program, which was operated by Stewardship Ontario until October 2021. Ryse Solutions is now in partnership with Ontario Parks to give day visitors and campers the opportunity to safely and responsibly dispose of their empty non-refillable propane and butane containers. This will be possible at 200 provincial parks across the province and year-round. There will be collection cages located at designated areas within the parks so that they’re easily identifiable by guests.
It is now going to be easy for campers to conveniently and safely recycle their empty non-refillable propane and butane containers, and doing this will also contribute to Ontario’s circular economy by diverting valuable resources from landfills and aligning with the province’s sustainability targets. And this might means less of a need for disposal bin rentals for parks near Colborne and Trenton.
Better, More Realistic Producer Compliance Options
The HSP Regulation comes under Ontario’s extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulatory framework. The aim with it is to make producers accountable and fiscally responsible for their products and packaging once consumers have used them. It also sets mandatory and enforceable requirements for resource recovery, and provides producers with choices for resource recovery services. The OrangeCycle Program is seen as positive step forward in providing a custom solution to help producers comply with the regulatory requirements.
It is a great example of how a competitive EPR framework can work to enable efficient and agile programs with strong environmental outcomes, and the last part of that will be obvious considering the very negative affects that would come from improper disposal of these metal canisters that cannot be processed like regular waste and really do need to be recycled as much as possible. Non-refillable pressurized containers are potentially dangerous even when emptied and depressurized, and if they are punctured they may explode.
But it’s not only recycling that the plan creators have in mind for these canisters. The empty steel canister are then sent to metal recyclers to be turned into new products, and this is always the best outcomes for any product that can be recycled. Hopefully we continue to see more of this in the future.
