C&D stands for construction and demolition, and there is really no debating the fact that those are two of the types of jobs where the capacity to make waste is about as pronounced as it gets. Part of our waste disposal services for Trenton and Colborne areas of Ontario is providing disposal bin rentals to sites where older building are being demolished. It is a darn good thing that a greater focus is being put on recycling materials these days, and there is so much in the way of building materials that can be repurposed so long as they are recovered right.
We just take care of the dumpster rentals and trash disposal in Trenton and Colborne, but we do know that the Province of Ontario is always looking for ways to optimize their waste management efforts and better recycling alongside them. All across North America and Europe C&D recycling systems have been evolving slowly over the years. With so many different types of materials being generated from demoed buildings plus renovations and new construction starts we can definitely relate to what it takes for a sorting system to separate out valuable constituent materials and keeping certain ones out of landfill.
Big on Ballistic
Low speed shredders have been workhorses in this type of production chain for decades, and when steel Z-pan apron feeders were added to help provide a metered, more uniform flow to downstream equipment and workers it really added the efficiency of the whole recovery process for most types of materials. Another solid design change was to have low feed heights so that excavator operators could better see and control the material mix and flow going into the screen.
Rubber mat screens are newer choices too that works well for catching the ‘blowables’ that would be objectionable to landfills. But nothing is bigger on this front than the advances that have been made with ballistic separators and specifically with how bigger had been enabled to be better. Many civic waste management and recycling facilities in North America now use an extreme heavy-duty 14 x 20’ ballistic separator that is capable of reliable 3-way material separation.
developed a piece of front-end machinery to do just that—an extreme-duty, 14 foot by 20 foot ballistic separator. While its predecessor, the primary vibratory Finger Screen, strictly separated big from small, the ballistic separator allows for a three-way material separation.
How it Works
This type of ballistic separator has paddles that pass the small- to medium-size fraction through circular holes in them, and at the same time providing the two-dimensional stream (tarps, carpet, film plastic, cardboard – those types of materials) up and over the end, separating aggregates like wood and rigid plastics at the same time over the opposite end.
In a simpler way of understanding the benefit of this, it means far fewer manual sorters are needed at these types of facilities. Better and more reliable recovery is part of the appeal too, as valuable recyclables on the 3D conveyor can now be seen more readily and accessed for optimized recovery. 3D -sort line improvements in material recovery and recycling are also going to be important as robotic technology slowly starts to enter the picture over the no-too-distant future.
Higher Recovery Rates
These improved ballistic separator is going to improve material recovery rates exponentially with the way it typically follows a shredder and vibe pan feeder to help spread out the flow to the far reaches of its paddles. Application is different too, with a more uniform, regulated and stratified material flow, that makes for far higher recovery rates than would be possible on lines featuring older sorting mechanisms.
They are also better for negative sorting wood. Having the ballistic separator mechanically separating the large two-dimensional from the 3D stream means negative sorting of wood on the 3D sort line is very possible and not especially complicated. The only drawbacks? Sheer size and weight and higher capital cost that somewhat offsets the lower long-term operating costs.
Robotics definitely are the future here, and North American recyclers have found out that it will help to substantially improve the performance of human sorters and overall lines in the here and now in advance of that. The result is there is little doubt that we will see an increasing number of C&D systems utilizing robots to help out manual sorters in the coming years, with their utilization framed around working with new technological advancements already in place
