If you’ve never been to France it likely means you’ve never been across the Atlantic at all, and that’s because Paris and all the other destinations there are known to be exceptional when it comes to culture and experiences. There are other great countries and cities in Europe, but we’re not travel experts and our expertise is in waste disposal for Colborne and Trenton here in Ontario. We do dumpster rentals here, but that doesn’t mean we don’t take an interest in international travel.
What we take more of an interest in is waste disposal technology and how we play a small part in a much bigger chain of how the things we ‘throw away’ are managed most effectively for our interest and ecological ones too. Which is why this news of waste disposal bins in the French city of Toulouse are now utilizing artificial intelligence to optimize collection resources and skip flows is the kind of stuff that piques our interest and that’s why we’ll make it our topic here for January? AI in waste management? It’s happening!
Smart Since July 2020
Load & Lift is always best for dumpster rentals in Colborne and Trenton, but we’ll freely admit while our dumpsters are as durable and versatile as any they aren’t ‘smart’. However since the summer of 2020, 200 bins utilized by 13 waste disposal centres in Toulouse have been enabled with embedded artificial intelligence.
They have coined it as the ffly4u solution and what it has done is reduced fuel consumption, improved skip flows considerably and reduced overall costs related to waste management with trash disposal and recycling as a part of that.
What started with 1 bin and one waste management center has grown 20x in size and added 13 more canters who wanted to get on board because they’ve seen how advances in waste management technology can make it so that they are able to do their jobs better and with less cost for the taxpayer eventually.
How Smart Dumpsters Work
Connected devices are attached to that give overseers real-time visibility for the bin’s filling rate, where it is located at and off the dock, as well as for waste disposal centre status and how / where it is in transit. Operational teams also have precise knowledge of the load / unload phase for each bin and calculating – among other metrics – how long it takes to get the bin off the ground and onto the truck or and how much idle time is involved in the entire process.
That’s just one example of many of how waste management canters now have the ability to have any eye on their operations like never before. This digitization optimizes the planning, filling and transport of skips and to date has been promoting a 5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) linked to waste transportation in that area of the country.
What is happening here is an ideal pairing of AI and machine learning, and these devices are also smartly engineered to be low energy consumption too. Each unit is estimated to have a working life of 4 to 6 years before it may have to be refurbished or replaced and this technology is also be earmarked for returnable transit packing and the aeronautics sector in France.
The ffly4u innovation relies on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in a device with low energy consumption, that will run for four to six years. The solution, “Edge AI Low Power”, launched in 2018 by ffly4u, is also used to track assets in the cable/fiber, trailers, Returnable Transit Packaging and aeronautics sectors.
Measurable Improvements
This is as noteworthy as it because better waste management and recycling in Ontario is going to have the same needs; specifically that not only are the systems in place for better management and less waste ending up landfills, but that the ‘transit’ end of the equation is also scrutinized too and improvements are made so that it is improved in step with the actual processing of the materials.
We are keen to see this type of technology makes its way here to North America, and if it improves any aspect of our trash disposal service in Trenton and Colborne and we can get on board with making our operations more efficient too then that will be best.
Need to disposal bin rental for your job site in the area? You’ll find that Load n’ Lift is best for service, pricing, and convenience as well as the ability to have bins on site when you need them and gone on your timeline the same way. Last but not least, remember that we dispose of all waste collected entirely in line with Provincial regulations and we believe in being a responsible service provider in this way.
